Bespoke Hand Painted Fireplaces

Hand Painted Fireplace in Breche Violet Marble Belgravia Kris In Progress 2 HEADER

A fireplace is often the heart of a room. It draws the eye, anchors the furniture, and quietly sets the tone for the whole interior. Yet many fireplaces, however well shaped or well made, are simply not the right colour, material, or style for the room around them. Sometimes the proportions are perfect, but the stone feels heavy. Sometimes the design is beautiful, but the marble is tired, dated, or no longer suits the scheme. In other cases, the original fireplace is sound and worth keeping, but the client wants something more individual.

Using the new Advanced Lacquer Paint system, we can transform an existing fireplace into something extraordinary. A plain surround can become precious marble. A stone fireplace can be painted to resemble warm timber. A wooden chimney piece can be reimagined as limestone, alabaster, or antique marble, or even metal.

Why Choose a Hand Painted Fireplace?

The first is often practicality. If you already have a fireplace with a shape you love, replacing it can be a disruptive and expensive process. Removal creates mess, dust, delay, and often damage to surrounding finishes. A new fireplace then has to be sourced, delivered, adapted, and fitted. There may also be awkward issues with the opening, proportions, hearth size, or the existing chimney breast.

A hand painted fireplace finish avoids much of that upheaval.

Instead of ripping out the original, we work with what is already there. The transformation happens in situ, with far less disruption to the room and the home as a whole. It is a cleaner, less invasive, and often more elegant solution.

In addition, we can also work on transforming fireplaces that are yet to be installed. Whether that is the whole fireplace or a specific decorative feature that will be added later, we can assess the best way to work on it before installation. HV’ART also specialises in pattern blending, corrections or touch ins that might be needed on fireplaces or surrounding surfaces.

It is not a budget shortcut, and it should not be mistaken for one. Specialist decorative painting is highly skilled and labour intensive. But value is measured in more than material alone. When clients weigh the disruption, fitting costs, sourcing challenges, and limitations of replacement against the artistry and flexibility of a bespoke painted finish, many find the painted option deeply appealing.

Other reasons clients choose this route include:

  • Preserving the original fireplace shape they already love
  • Retaining the rooms architectural integrity
  • Recreating rare antique marbles or stones that are difficult or impossible to source
  • Commissioning a bespoke decorative finish rather than buying off the shelf
  • Matching the fireplace to surrounding schemes, furniture, panelling, or architectural details
  • Creating a novel and highly individual talking point within the room

The Beauty of Bespoke Marble, Stone and Wood Effects

One of the most exciting aspects of our work is that almost anything is possible.

If a client falls in love with an image of a rare antique marble, one that they saw in a book, on a trip, or in an antique interior, we can study that reference and create a bespoke interpretation for their fireplace. If they want a soft stone appearance with texture and age, we can build that too. If they would like a timber mantel to feel like carved stone, or a stone surround to take on the warmth of wood, that transformation can be achieved through skilled decorative painting and the right materials.

We have painted fireplaces to resemble:

  • Antique marble
  • Bronzed metal
  • Onyx
  • Limestone
  • Travertine
  • Scagliola
  • Carved stone
  • Aged timber
  • Faux wood grain
  • Textured plaster and mineral surfaces

A bespoke hand painted fireplace is not just a decorative treatment. It is a conversation between architecture, craft, and imagination. You can view a few of our previous fireplaces projects here.

Using the Advanced Lacquer Paint System

The new Advanced Lacquer Paint system helps us achieve this with precision and consistency, while allowing the hand of the craftsman to remain present in the work.

This system allows us to create highly refined decorative finishes with excellent adhesion, superb clarity and softness, and a beautifully smooth surface. It gives us the flexibility to work in layered, detailed ways while maintaining control over depth, pattern, tone, sheen, and finish quality. Depending on the design, the system can be used to create crisp polished effects, softly aged stone surfaces, rich marble movement, or quietly elegant painted wood effects.

In addition, the finish is maintainable and cleanable in case of soot and ash— wipe the area with a soft, slightly damp cloth and avoid harsh solvents and abrasive pads.

A Commissioned Surface, Not a Standard Product

This is one of the reasons people are drawn to decorative painting. A painted fireplace is not simply a product. It is a piece of unique decorative art made for a particular room and a particular client, highlighting craftsmanship and artistry.

For some, the appeal lies in saving an existing feature and giving it a new life. For others, it is the pleasure of owning something that feels rare and thoughtful. Many clients enjoy the novelty of revealing, with pride, that what appears to be carved of marble, stone, or wood is in fact a beautifully executed painted finish.

That sense of surprise and individuality is something mass-produced interiors rarely offer.

Beyond the Fireplace

A fireplace commission can also be extended into the wider room. We regularly create related finishes that help tie schemes together beautifully. These may include:

  • Hand painted marble socket plates
  • Decorative switch plates
  • Coordinated door and panel finishes
  • Specialist lacquered walls or ceilings
  • Matching stone, wood, or plaster effects on surrounding architectural features

Details like hand painted marble socket plates can make all the difference. They allow fittings to sit more quietly within the design, helping the room feel considered, resolved, and complete.
