These giant columns are made of medium-density-fibreboard (MDF) an engineered wood. They were designed by the David Collins studio for a restaurant in the city. The columns were built in a grand lobby that is surrounded by acres of marble that could no longer be quarried. Faced with the challenge of making these columns juxtapose and feel at home, they decided a faux marble painted finish would be the ideal solution. Commissioned by Calfe Crimmings.

“The Hallway was painted by Henry van der Vijver and goes from dark to light. The colours in my favourite glazed vase inspired him and I’m really thrilled with it. The room looks bigger and rather jewel like and by lacquering the ceiling we have finished the theme. People often forget about ceilings and it can make such a difference”- Nina Campbell

The Sunday Times

“Venetian polished plasters and finishes such as marmorino are also coming back into vogue, courtesy of Henry van der Vijver. These are a more subtle way of creating interest for they rely on specialist techniques and layers of stone & marble plaster to give rich and moody effects. They look particularly wonderful in deep colours such as aubergine and claret, and are amazing in a Venetian red. Many of the finishes- such as Stucco Venetiano- are not only ravishing to look at, they are practical too. Suede, pearl and metallic finishes are available.”- Lucia van der Post.

The Mail On Sunday

“No more the Status Quo”

“We changed the interiors of the apartment after we moved in as everything was plain magnolia” says Patty. “We used decorative artist Henry van der Vijver and team, who had some beautiful decorative designs, and had been working around the world on surface finishes. Some of the effects resemble a soft kind of marbling. There were layers of paint finished with a beautiful flat lacquers. They are beautifully practical and Henry has guaranteed that they will last for 30 years plus. Gold leaf has been applied to the large square area on the wall above the master bed and the piano in the lounge. There is also some gold detailing on the stairs.”
